Parent Hires Thugs to Attack VP Over WAEC Exam Crackdown

The Vice Principal of Complete Child Development College in Aule, Akure, Ondo State, Mr. Rotifa, was reportedly assaulted by suspected thugs allegedly hired by the parent of a student caught attempting to cheat during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
According to a preliminary report released by the Ondo State Ministry of Education and compiled by the Director of Schools, the attack stemmed from an incident on May 26, 2025, when Mr. Rotifa confiscated an Android phone from an SS3 student.
The use of mobile phones during exams violates both school rules and WAEC guidelines.
Following the seizure, the student’s mother reportedly stormed the school premises in a confrontational manner. In an effort to de-escalate the situation, the school proprietor instructed that the phone be returned.
However, tensions escalated when the student’s brother—an alumnus of the school—allegedly arrived later that day to threaten Mr. Rotifa.
Concerned for his safety, the Vice Principal reported the threats to the police. Two officers accompanied him in a patrol vehicle in an attempt to locate the suspects.
However, while returning to the station after an unsuccessful search, the officers were ambushed by the assailants who forcibly removed Mr. Rotifa from the police vehicle and beat him severely.
He was immediately taken to the hospital and has since been discharged. However, reports indicate that he has avoided returning home out of fear of further attacks.
The state government says efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators, while arrangements are being made to ensure the safety of staff and students for the remainder of the WASSCE examination period.
