Trump Warns Musk of ‘Serious Consequences’ for Backing Democrats
Former President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Elon Musk, cautioning that there will be “very serious consequences” if the billionaire entrepreneur shifts his financial support toward Democratic candidates in the lead-up to the 2026 midterm elections.
Speaking during a phone interview with NBC News on Saturday, Trump addressed the recent tensions between him and the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, which began with a public feud on social media.
When asked about the possibility of Musk financially backing Democrats, Trump didn’t mince words: “If he does, he’ll have to pay the consequences for that. He’ll have to pay very serious consequences.”
Trump made it clear that he has no interest in reconciling with Musk, saying their relationship is likely over. “I have no intention of speaking to him,” the former president said.
“His actions over the past week have been very disrespectful—not just to me, but to the office of the president.”
The spat erupted Thursday night when Trump suggested on Truth Social that a quick way to save taxpayer money would be to “terminate Elon’s governmental subsidies and contracts,” referring to the significant federal funding Musk’s companies receive.
When asked to elaborate on that statement Saturday, Trump responded, “It’s not something that’s top of mind right now.”
Despite the growing rift, some Republican leaders are calling for reconciliation.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., acknowledged that a thaw in relations between Trump and Musk could benefit the country, but he reaffirmed his unwavering support for the former president. “Don’t ever challenge Donald Trump. He’s the leader of the party.
He is the most consequential political figure of this generation—perhaps of the modern era—and he’s doing an excellent job for the people,” Johnson said.
Trump closed by boasting about his dominance within the GOP: “The Republican Party has never been this united. Not even close. It’s actually more unified now than it was three days ago.”
