Emotional Ronaldo Clinches Third Title with Portugal in Nations League Triumph

Ronaldo’s Heroics Help Portugal Edge Spain in Dramatic Nations League Final
Cristiano Ronaldo added another glorious chapter to his legendary career as Portugal defeated long-time rivals Spain on penalties to win the Nations League.
Though substituted in the 88th minute, Ronaldo had already made a significant impact, scoring the crucial equaliser in the 61st minute — his 138th international goal and eighth of the tournament.
The 40-year-old striker, still defying age while playing in Saudi Arabia for Al-Nassr, showed his trademark instinct with a poacher’s finish from Nuno Mendes’ deflected cross.
Despite limited touches on the ball, Ronaldo also helped defensively, notably dispossessing Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who was kept largely quiet.
Spain, who looked dominant in earlier rounds — including a 5-4 semi-final thriller against France — were stopped in their tracks.
It was their first failure to claim a trophy since the 2022 World Cup, after back-to-back titles in the 2023 Nations League and Euro 2024.
Ronaldo, in tears after the win, told reporters:
“Winning for Portugal is always special. I’ve won many trophies with clubs, but nothing compares to this. This is tears, this is joy, this is duty fulfilled.”
Mendes Shines on Both Ends
Portugal’s Nuno Mendes was named Man of the Match after a commanding performance. He not only netted Portugal’s first equaliser with a composed strike but also played a vital role in neutralizing Yamal.

His stats were staggering: more successful dribbles, passes into the final third, and tackles than any teammate.
His performance capped off a brilliant week — having just won the Champions League with PSG at the same stadium.
Martinez Delivers First Major International Title
The win marked manager Roberto Martinez’s first international trophy, silencing doubts about his future.
Speculation had swirled about a potential dismissal with reports suggesting Portugal’s new FA president favoured replacements like Jorge Jesus or José Mourinho.

But with Ronaldo flourishing under his leadership and the team delivering results, Martinez may have secured his place — at least through the 2026 World Cup.
“He’s brought the best out of Ronaldo again,” noted Spanish journalist Guillem Balague.
“How can they sack him now?”
Despite Spain’s pedigree and young stars like Yamal, Portugal proved their mettle, blending experience with emerging talent to claim a dramatic, well-earned title.
