Ex-Minister Attacked with Axe Over Alleged Affair

Former Cabinet Minister and longtime Binga South legislator, Joel Gabbuza, is recovering in hospital after a violent axe attack, believed to have stemmed from a suspected love triangle.
The assault reportedly took place late on Friday, June 7, 2025.
According to sources, Gabbuza was allegedly attacked by a man who accused him of having an affair with his wife.
Though the motive is thought to be personal, police have yet to release an official statement.
Witnesses claim the suspect fled the scene, and a manhunt is underway as authorities investigate.
In the aftermath, unfounded rumours of Gabbuza’s death spread widely on social media. However, his family has since confirmed that he is alive and receiving medical attention.
“He is at Hwange Colliery Hospital, and his condition has improved since last night. He is now able to speak,” Gabbuza’s son told CITE.
Plans are reportedly in motion to transfer him to Mpilo Hospital in Bulawayo for advanced care.
Gabbuza, a seasoned politician, began his parliamentary career in 2000 as a member of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), representing Binga.
He later became MP for Binga South following electoral boundary changes in 2008 and served in that capacity until his recall in October 2023.
He also held a cabinet post as Minister of Water Resources and Development during Zimbabwe’s Government of National Unity from 2009 to 2013, before being succeeded by Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri when the ministry was restructured.
More details regarding the incident and Gabbuza’s recovery are expected in the coming days as investigations continue.
