Tinubu to Address NASS, Honour Lawmakers on June 12

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will address a joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday, June 12, as part of activities commemorating Nigeria’s 2025 Democracy Day celebration.
Democracy Day, held annually on June 12, honours the landmark 1993 presidential election widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s post-independence history.
The election, won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, was annulled by the military regime led by General Ibrahim Babangida (retd), sparking years of political agitation and eventual democratic reforms.
According to a statement issued on Sunday, June 8, by Akin Rotimi, spokesperson of the House of Representatives, the joint session will take place in the House of Representatives Chamber at the National Assembly Complex.
The event is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m., with President Tinubu expected to arrive by 12:00 noon.
The announcement, conveyed internally through a memorandum from House Clerk Yahaya Danzaria, also revealed that President Tinubu will confer national honours on select lawmakers during the ceremony.
The theme of this year’s celebration is: “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.”
Rotimi emphasized that the occasion will feature goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly, and will highlight the legislature’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic consolidation since the return to civil rule in 1999.
“This joint sitting represents a significant moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey,” the statement read. “It underscores the vital role of the National Assembly in protecting democratic principles, promoting accountability, and advancing national progress over the past 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.”
President Tinubu will serve as the Special Guest of Honour and is expected to deliver a keynote address reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic strides and the path forward.
