Trump Deploys National Guard to L.A. Amid Immigration Raid Unrest

U.S. President Donald Trump has authorized the deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles in response to mounting unrest triggered by federal immigration raids.
The move follows a second consecutive day of street protests in the city’s Paramount district — a predominantly Latino area — where demonstrators clashed with agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The protests erupted after reports of aggressive immigration enforcement actions targeting undocumented residents.
Federal agents reportedly used tear gas and so-called “less-lethal” projectiles to disperse crowds that had gathered in protest.
The confrontations have intensified tensions between local communities and federal authorities.
In a formal statement, President Trump said the deployment was necessary to maintain law and order. “To the extent that protests or acts of violence directly inhibit the execution of the laws, they constitute a form of rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States,” the order reads.
It authorizes National Guard units to temporarily protect federal immigration officers and assist in “restoring stability.”
However, the move has sparked sharp criticism from California officials. Governor Gavin Newsom took to social media to condemn the federal action, stating: “The federal government is taking over the California National Guard and deploying 2,000 soldiers in Los Angeles — not because there is a shortage of law enforcement, but because they want a spectacle. Don’t give them one. Never use violence. Speak out peacefully.”
The situation remains fluid, and further updates are expected as both local and federal authorities respond to ongoing protests and public backlash.
