Isaac Fayose Slams Wike, Tinubu Over ₦39bn ICC Renovation

Businessman and political commentator Isaac Fayose has criticized Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the reported ₦39 billion renovation of the Abuja International Conference Centre (ICC)—a facility originally constructed for just ₦240 million in 1991 during the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida.
Fayose, known for his candid takes on governance, described the renovation as an act of “ego construction” and questioned the rationale behind such a hefty expenditure in the midst of Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions.
“The ICC was built from scratch in 1991 with ₦240 million. In 2025, we’re now spending ₦39 billion just to renovate it? That’s not development—it’s self-indulgence,” Fayose said.
“This isn’t about infrastructure or national pride. It’s about rewriting history using public funds—for paint, bricks, and personal branding.”
He further expressed frustration over what he sees as misplaced priorities, arguing that such spending reflects a disconnect from the daily struggles of ordinary Nigerians battling inflation and economic hardship.
“There’s a deeper issue here. It’s not just about the money, it’s about what we value as a country,” Fayose added.
“While citizens can barely afford basic necessities, we’re pumping billions into monuments of self-glorification.”
The facility has since been renamed the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, a move Fayose and others view as part of a broader trend of using public resources to bolster political legacies rather than address pressing national issues.
