Liam Delap Eyes More Action, Ready to Compete with Jackson at Chelsea

Liam Delap is eager to build on a promising start after making his Chelsea debut, expressing confidence that he can thrive in the competitive environment alongside fellow striker Nicolas Jackson.
The 21-year-old was introduced just after the hour mark in Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Los Angeles FC in their Club World Cup opener.
Replacing Jackson, Delap made an immediate impact by assisting Enzo Fernandez’s goal within minutes of stepping onto the pitch — a moment he described as “a really happy feeling.”
“It’s always great to have competition — that’s football,” Delap said after the match. “At a club like Chelsea, you know it’s going to be incredibly tough, but it’s something you have to embrace and thrive on.”

Delap’s debut performance added a new dimension to Chelsea’s attacking options, especially as Jackson also contributed to the win by setting up Pedro Neto’s goal earlier in the game.
With both strikers now delivering meaningful contributions, the battle for Chelsea’s starting No. 9 shirt is heating up — and Delap welcomes it.
“I’m so excited to be here, and to get on the pitch and contribute so soon is amazing. The squad has welcomed me warmly.
I’ve only had a few training sessions, but I already feel like I’m part of the group,” he added.
When asked whether fans should expect more assists or goals from him in future games, Delap was clear: “Yes, of course. It’s great to help the team with assists, but as a striker, I want to score goals too.”
Delap’s transition into Chelsea’s system may be eased by a familiar face in head coach Enzo Maresca.
The duo previously worked together during Delap’s time in the Manchester City youth setup, and their existing rapport is already showing dividends.
“The good thing about Liam is that he understands our style of play, so the integration has been quite seamless,” Maresca noted.
“We also gave a chance to Dario Essugo — both are young and hungry players, and that’s encouraging to see.”
While Jackson has had a somewhat inconsistent spell in front of goal, registering 10 Premier League goals in the 2024–25 season, Delap arrives off the back of a productive campaign with Ipswich Town.
Despite their relegation, he managed to score 12 goals — a return that hints at his potential to shine on a bigger stage.
As Chelsea gear up for more fixtures in the Club World Cup and the upcoming Premier League season, Delap’s debut has sparked fresh optimism about his role in the squad — and the battle for the striker position is only just beginning.
