Over 10 Killed in Enugu as Suspected Herdsmen Launch Brutal Attack on Aguamede Community
Suspected armed herdsmen launched a deadly attack on the Aguamede community in Eha-Amufu, located in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State, on Sunday evening, June 16, leaving at least 10 people dead and several others missing.
According to reports by Vanguard, the assailants struck around 4:30 p.m., while many residents were still attending church services.
Eyewitnesses described the assault as sudden and brutal, noting that the attackers used machetes rather than firearms, catching the community completely off guard.
“They didn’t fire a single gunshot. They just descended on people’s homes and started butchering them like animals,” a resident recounted in horror.
“By the time anyone realized what was going on, more than 10 people had already been hacked to death.”
Community members also raised suspicions that the attackers may have been dropped off by a helicopter, which was reportedly seen hovering around the area earlier in the day — a development that has deepened fears of a larger, more coordinated operation.
Victims were said to have sustained deep machete wounds to the skull and other parts of the body.
Search efforts continued through the night, with residents stating that more people remain unaccounted for.
This is not the first time Eha-Amufu has experienced such violence.
Just last week, four people were reportedly killed in a similar attack in the nearby Mbuji community, also allegedly carried out by herdsmen.
As of the time of reporting, the Enugu State Police Command has not issued an official statement on the latest incident, further fueling public anxiety and calls for urgent government intervention.
Local leaders and residents are pleading for immediate security reinforcements, warning that continued attacks could escalate into a full-blown humanitarian crisis.
