FG to hold crucial meeting with ASUU on Monday to avert strike

AdminBy AdminNovember 23, 2025Updated:November 23, 2025No Comments1 Min Read

The Nigerian Federal Government is set to meet with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday, November 24, 2025, in a bid to resolve longstanding disputes and prevent another nationwide strike.

The Minister of Education, Dr.TunjiAlausa, confirmed that ASUU leaders, along with other relevant stakeholders, have been invited to the discussions.

Key issues expected to be addressed include unpaid earned allowances, promotion arrears, and funding for public universities.

In a show of commitment, the government recently reconstituted an Expanded Negotiation Committee to fast-track talks with university staff unions, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

The government has also released funds for earned academic allowances and included significant allocations in the 2025 budget for university revitalization.

Despite these measures, sources within ASUU have described the meeting as potentially being a “delay tactic” by the government, prompting the union to place its members on “red alert” as the scheduled talks approach.

Monday’s meeting is expected to be crucial in determining whether academic activities across Nigeria will continue uninterrupted or face disruption.

Both parties are anticipated to engage in detailed discussions aimed at finding lasting solutions that will avert another strike and ensure the stability of the nation’s educational system.
