JUST IN: Tinubu orders withdrawal of Police officers guarding VIPs

AdminBy AdminNovember 23, 2025Updated:November 23, 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate withdrawal of police officers attached to Very Important Persons (VIPs) across the country, ordering that they return to regular policing duties.

Officers to Focus on Core Duties

A statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said henceforth, police authorities will deploy the officers providing VIP security to concentrate on their core police duties.

According to the statement, the presidential directive was issued at the security meeting President Tinubu held on Sunday with the police, Air Force, army chiefs and the Director-General of the Department of State Services, DSS, in Abuja.

Police Protection for VIPs to Be Handled by NSCDC

The statement further noted that the President has approved a new arrangement for individuals who still require official protection.

The Presidential directive stated that “VIPs who want police protection will now request well-armed personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.”

Shortage of Officers in Communities

The Presidency raised concerns over the shortage of police officers in many areas across the country.

The statement added: “Many parts of Nigeria, especially remote areas, have few policemen at the stations, thus making the task of protecting and defending the people difficult.”

“In view of the current security challenges facing the country, President Tinubu is desirous of boosting police presence in all communities.”

Approval of 30,000 New Recruits

To strengthen manpower, the President has also approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police personnel.

The statement noted: “Already, President Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers. The federal government is also collaborating with the states to upgrade police training facilities nationwide.”

Service Chiefs Present at Meeting

Sunday’s security meeting had top service chiefs in attendance, including the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and the Director-General of the DSS, Tosin Adeola Ajayi.
