Calbee Group UK Ltd is recalling its Hot & Spicy Chips and Pizza Chips after it was discovered that the products contained undeclared allergens not mentioned on the label.

The Hot & Spicy variety contains undeclared mustard, while the Pizza Chips contain undeclared celery.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued the allergy alert on December 5, 2025, warning that the affected items could trigger severe reactions in people with allergies to these ingredients.

The recall affects the following products:

  • Calbee Hot & Spicy Chips in 55g packs, with best before dates up to and including June 5, 2026.
  • Calbee Hot & Spicy Chips in 105g packs, with best before dates up to and including June 5, 2026.
  • Calbee Pizza Chips in 55g packs, with best before dates up to and including April 28, 2026.

In a statement on its website, the FSA said: “Calbee Group UK Ltd is recalling the above products.

“Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling these products.

“These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the products.”

Consumers with an allergy or intolerance to mustard or celery are urged not to eat the products and to return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. No receipt is required.

For further information, shoppers can contact Calbee’s customer care team on 0330 660 0015 or via email at consumercare@calbee.co.uk.

The company has also notified relevant allergy support organisations, which will inform their members about the recall.

Allergy alerts like this are issued when there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect.

Mustard and celery are among the 14 major allergens that must be declared on food labels under UK law.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, swelling, or difficulty breathing, should seek immediate medical attention.

Your product recall rights

PRODUCT recalls are an important means of protecting consumers from dangerous goods.

As a general rule, if a recall involves a branded product, the manufacturer would usually have lead responsibility for the recall action.

But it’s often left up to supermarkets to notify customers when products could put them at risk.

If you are concerned about the safety of a product you own, always check the manufacturer’s website to see if a safety notice has been issued.

When it comes to appliances, rather than just food items, the onus is usually on you – the customer – to register the appliance with the manufacturer as if you don’t there is no way of contacting you to tell you about a fault.

If you become aware that an item you own has been recalled or has any safety noticed issued against it, make sure you follow the instructions given to you by the manufacturer.

They should usually provide you with more information and a contact number on its safety notice.

In some cases, the manufacturer might ask you to return the item for a full refund or arrange for the faulty product to be collected.

You should not be charged for any recall work – such as a repair, replacement or collection of the recalled item.

Last week, Aldi issued an urgent recall for its Dairyfine Salted Caramel Filled Gonks because it may contain peanuts.

Peanuts are not mentioned on the label, so it could pose a possible health risk for anyone with a nut allergy.

The notice affects the 90g bags with the batch code: 4061463276865.

All of these products are affected no matter what the best before date listed is.

An urgent warning was also issued over John Lewis sofas due to a potential fire risk.

The affectedproductsare 2-seater and 3-seater slider sofas in natural chenille and navy chenille fabrics, sold between August 5, 2025, and October 30, 2025.

The warning involves product codes 87023201, 87023202, 87021703, 87021702, 87021701 and 87021704.

According to the official product safety report, the sofas pose afirerisk because of a faulty button on the recliner mechanism.

This fault could cause the circuit board to overheat and malfunction, leading thereclinerto stop working.

Symptoms of a food allergy – and when to call 999

Symptoms of a food allergy can affect any part of the body, including different parts of the body at the same time.

Common symptoms of a food allergy include:

  • feeling dizzy or lightheaded
  • itchy skin or a raised rash (hives)
  • swelling of the lips, face and eyes (angioedema)
  • coughing, wheezing, breathlessness, noisy breathing or a hoarse voice
  • sneezing or an itchy, runny or blocked nose
  • feeling sick or being sick
  • tummy pain
  • diarrhoea

You may get symptoms straight after eating the food you’re allergic to, or days later.

Call 999 if:

  • your lips, mouth, throat or tongue suddenly become swollen
  • you’re breathing very fast or struggling to breathe (you may become very wheezy or feel like you’re choking or gasping for air)
  • your throat feels tight or you’re struggling to swallow
  • your skin, tongue or lips turn blue, grey or pale (if you have black or brown skin, this may be easier to see on the palms of your hands or soles of your feet)
  • you suddenly become very confused, drowsy or dizzy
  • someone faints and cannot be woken up
  • a child is limp, floppy or not responding like they normally do (their head may fall to the side, backwards or forwards, or they may find it difficult to lift their head or focus on your face)

You or the person who’s unwell may also have a rash that’s swollen, raised or itchy.

These can be signs of a serious allergic reaction and may need immediate treatment in hospital.
