Man City close Premier League gap to two points after routine win over Sunderland

AdminBy AdminDecember 6, 2025Updated:December 6, 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

Manchester City executed a business-first performance at the Etihad, leveraging Arsenal’s earlier slip to tighten the Premier League title race and move within two points of the summit.

Pep Guardiola’s side entered the fixture under clear competitive pressure after Arsenal’s late collapse at Villa Park.

City responded with operational efficiency, neutralising Sunderland’s low block and delivering a controlled 3-0 victory.

Defenders break the deadlock

Sunderland’s five-man backline successfully slowed City’s rhythm early on, but the visitors’ resistance collapsed in a four-minute window.

Rúben Dias, afforded too much space, drove forward and unleashed a 30-yard strike that deflected off Dan Ballard into the top corner.

Moments later, Joško Gvardiol rose above the pack to bury a powerful header from Phil Foden’s inswinging corner, establishing a comfortable half-time lead.

City maintain dtrategic control

City pushed to extend their margin after the interval. Jeremy Doku struck the post, Foden saw a promising follow-up blocked, and Erling Haaland had a hooked effort cleared off the line by Lutsharel Geertruida.

The third goal arrived following high-quality execution: Rayan Cherki’s incisive delivery allowed Foden to head home and close out the contest.

Sunderland’s limited threat and late red card

The visitors created little before the break, though Enzo Le Fée threatened once.

Gianluigi Donnarumma later denied Wilson Isidor after a rare misplaced touch from Dias, while Granit Xhaka rattled the post with a driven effort.

Sunderland’s evening deteriorated further when Luke O’Nien was dismissed in stoppage time for a studs-high challenge on Matheus Nunes, upgraded to a red after VAR review.

City’s win re-establishes competitive pressure at the top end of the table and keeps the title race firmly in open.
