Neymar helps Santos avoid relegation amid knee problem

AdminBy AdminDecember 8, 2025Updated:December 8, 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

Neymar once again proved decisive for Santos, driving a vital 3-0 win over Cruzeiro to seal the club’s top-flight safety.

But the post-match narrative shifted quickly, as the 33-year-old confirmed he will undergo knee surgery and acknowledged that his future remains unresolved with his contract about to expire.

Santos’ win capped a late-season turnaround that lifted them to 12th place with 47 points, avoiding what would have been a historic relegation.

Neymar, playing through significant knee discomfort, operated as the creative focal point after scoring five goals in the previous two matches. His influence helped set the tempo in front of a charged Vila Belmiro crowd.

Santos take control early

The home side dominated from the outset. Thaciano struck twice in the 26th and 28th minutes, capitalising on the fluid combinations generated by Neymar and the front line.

Joao Schmidt added a third shortly after the restart, sealing the result and confirming Santos’ safety.

For Neymar, the match closed out a demanding final stretch played under constant physical strain.

After the game, he spoke candidly about the toll of pushing through injury. “These have been tough weeks for me. If it weren’t for the people around me, I wouldn’t have played these matches because of this knee problem. I need to rest and then have this knee surgery,” he said.

Future still open as contract winds down

Pressed on his plans, Neymar did not provide clarity. “I don’t know. I need some days to rest, disconnect and then decide my future. My priority always goes to Santos,” he added.

His impending surgery, combined with an expiring contract, places negotiations in a difficult holding pattern.

The club now enters a critical decision window, with any new deal dependent on medical assessments and long-term recovery projections.

National team ambition looms large

Another major variable is Neymar’s push to remain in contention for the 2026 World Cup.

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has left the door open, noting he will call Neymar only if he is fit enough to contribute.
