AFCON 2025: Brahim Diaz hails Tanzania as Morocco toughest opponents so far

AdminBy AdminJanuary 5, 2026Updated:January 5, 2026No Comments2 Mins Read

Morocco midfielder Brahim Diaz has described the round of 16 clash against Tanzania as the most demanding challenge the Atlas Lions have faced so far at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, despite securing qualification for the quarterfinals.

Named TotalEnergies Man of the Match, Diaz acknowledged that Morocco were pushed hard by a disciplined Tanzanian side and admitted that performance levels were not flawless.

He stressed, however, that progression at this stage of the competition remains the primary objective.

According to the Real Madrid midfielder, the tournament is becoming increasingly competitive, with margins tightening as teams raise their level.

He noted that while Morocco were not at their best throughout the match, the ability to navigate difficult moments and still advance reflects the mentality required to succeed deep into the tournament.

Tanzania earn respect despite elimination

Tanzania head coach Miguel Ángel Gamondi struck a confident and defiant tone following his side’s exit, praising his players for their tactical discipline and commitment against one of Africa’s strongest teams.

He insisted the performance demonstrated that the perceived gap between established contenders and emerging sides is shrinking.

Gamondi expressed belief in Tanzania’s long-term trajectory, stating that the experience gained against elite opposition will serve as a foundation for future progress on the continental stage.

Regragui prioritises qualification over style

Morocco head coach Walid Regragui conceded that his side struggled to impose themselves in the first half but was encouraged by the improved cohesion and control shown after the break.

For Regragui, the overriding concern at this phase of the competition is survival and steady progression rather than aesthetic performance.

He emphasised that knockout football demands efficiency and emotional control, particularly as expectations rise with each round.

Injury setback for Morocco

The victory was tempered by confirmation that midfielder Azzedine Ounahi has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament after sustaining an injury in training.

Regragui described Ounahi as a key figure both on and off the pitch.

Morocco now shift focus to the quarterfinals, fully aware that the path ahead will be more demanding, especially learning their next opponents will be Cameroon.
