PARENTS have been warned their children face arrest if seen with catapults.
Police and education chiefs said there has been a rise in their use by school pupils.
Modern versions — also called slingshots — are powerful and have been linked to anti-social behaviour.
Now Gwent Police has joined forces with Torfaen County Borough Council to write to parents via schools.
A statement said: “Over recent weeks, we’ve seen an increase in young people carrying and using slingshots/catapults and there has been report of a pellet gun in public places.
“These items can cause injury, damage to property and distress to residents

“Catapults can be classed as an offensive weapon.
“Carrying one in a public place without reasonable excuse can lead to an arrest.
“Gwent Police will not hesitate to seize and destroy catapults if we suspect they are being used to commit crime or anti-social behaviour.”
Parents were encouraged to talk to kids about the risks and consequences of catapults — where even “messing about” can cause harm and lead to police involvement.
