Rosenior Begins Chelsea Reign with Dominant FA Cup Win at Charlton

Liam Rosenior marked the start of his Chelsea tenure with a commanding FA Cup third-round victory over Championship side Charlton, guiding his new team into the next stage of the competition.
Goals from Jorrel Hato and Tosin Adarabioyo gave Chelsea control before Miles Leaburn briefly reignited Charlton’s hopes in an entertaining second half at a sold-out Valley in south-east London. Marc Guiu quickly restored Chelsea’s two-goal cushion, while late strikes from substitutes Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez added further polish to the scoreline in stoppage time.
Charlton showed early intent, testing Chelsea with speculative efforts from Lloyd Jones and Tyreece Campbell. However, aside from a blocked Greg Docherty attempt, the visitors dominated possession, forced multiple saves, and eventually made their pressure count just before the interval.
Hato, just 19, opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time with a stunning half-volley into the top corner after Keenan Gough failed to clear his lines. It marked the teenager’s first goal for the club, moments after he had squandered a close-range header.
Chelsea doubled their advantage five minutes into the second half when Adarabioyo met Facundo Buonanotte’s deep free-kick, steering a composed header beyond the goalkeeper. Charlton continued to compete, with Alejandro Garnacho curling narrowly wide and Jones and Charlie Kelman both going close, but their breakthrough finally arrived when Leaburn converted from a corner after Filip Jorgensen brilliantly denied Jones’ initial effort.
Any momentum was short-lived. Guiu, also 19, reacted quickest to finish from close range and restore Chelsea’s two-goal lead. Late chances followed for Fernandez, Estevao Willian and Liam Delap before Neto struck emphatically in added time to make it 4–1. Fernandez then capped the evening by converting a penalty with the final kick after Estevao was fouled in the box.
Cole Palmer was rested ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal, while Rosenior remained composed on the touchline despite audible protests from sections of the away support as Chelsea secured their place in the fourth round.
Analysis: Charlton’s cup dream meets Chelsea’s reality
For Charlton, this was the glamour tie they had long hoped for, with Rosenior’s first match in charge little more than a footnote to the occasion. Manager Nathan Jones, who once coached Rosenior at Brighton, got the high-profile fixture he desired, complete with fireworks to underline its significance.
It was Charlton’s first home match against ‘big six’ opposition since their Premier League days in 2007, and while their effort was commendable, the disparity in resources ultimately proved decisive. The contrast off the pitch was stark: Charlton’s record signing remains Jason Euell’s £4.75m move in 2001, while Chelsea’s squad is valued at over £1bn and includes former British-record signing Moises Caicedo.
Yet for much of the first half, the gap was far from obvious. Chelsea controlled 77.8% possession and registered five shots on target, but still frustrated their own supporters, who chanted for greater attacking urgency while continuing protests against the club’s ownership — and in favour of former owner Roman Abramovich.
The atmosphere underscored the challenging environment Rosenior has inherited. Still, a goal just before half-time settled nerves, and Chelsea responded well after Charlton’s brief resurgence, finishing the contest strongly with quality from the bench.
Handling an emotional FA Cup tie, this performance offered a useful template for a big club under pressure and hinted at what could develop under a promising, if inexperienced, young manager. Tougher tests lie ahead, however — starting with Arsenal in Wednesday’s semi-final.
