Chimamanda: Toyin Lawani drags Euracare Hospital, says they destroyed her vocal cords too

AdminBy AdminJanuary 12, 2026Updated:January 12, 2026No Comments3 Mins Read

Nigerian fashion designer Toyin Lawani has joined award-winning author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in publicly calling out Euracare Multispecialist Hospital in Victoria Island, Lagos, over alleged medical negligence.

Lawani’s Spine Surgery Turned Traumatic

In a detailed Instagram post on Sunday, Lawani revealed that she underwent spinal surgery at Euracare, spending nearly ₦100 million on the procedure and related medical care.

According to her, complications arose shortly after the surgery. She wrote:

“Still suffering the consequences from Euracare right now… Till today I still can’t speak well or walk well. I had complications, started bleeding in my lungs, had to be taken back into the theatre the next day, to reoperate again, before I know I stopped breathing. They had to puncture my lungs & they destroyed my vocal cords.”

She went on to describe a terrifying night when she was given two injections and her heart seized, leaving her unable to breathe.

Lawani said her friends and family had to intervene to ensure she received urgent medical attention.

Seeking Treatment Abroad

Lawani revealed that she lost the use of both legs after being discharged, and had to call an ENT specialist in the United Kingdom for guidance.

She said: “He then told them to operate for the 3rd time to take the tracheotomy tube out from my lungs and see if I can breathe myself without it. After that surgery, I was on the next flight the next day to UK with my family. When I got here, the doctors told me I had to redo another surgery again & said I had infection in my lungs.”

She added that doctors in the UK removed large lumps from her lungs, leaving her in shock at the severity of her condition.

Trauma and ongoing recovery

Lawani described the ordeal as life-changing:

“Wo the trauma I faced in that hospital for months I still can’t get over it till date. I’m still in & out of hospital due to this. They won’t even care if it’s their mismanagement, you will still pay.”

She also expressed regret over having undergone the surgery in Nigeria:

“I kept asking myself why I did my spine surgery implant in Nigeria… after 3 surgeries in that same hospital back to back, yet I still had to have another one when I got to UK. It’s just so shameful.”

“See the statement is not said enough… if you have health issues in Nigeria, even if you have your money, just think carefully before going there,” she added.

Echoing Chimamanda Adichie’s Grievance

Lawani’s allegations come amid scrutiny of Euracare following Chimamanda Adichie’s claims over the death of her 21-month-old son, Nnamdi.

The author accused the hospital of negligence after her child experienced complications during preparations for an MRI and medical evacuation abroad.

The Lagos State Government has ordered a full investigation into the child’s death, while health authorities are reviewing the hospital’s clinical practices.
