Jesus vs Gyokeres: Stats show winner in battle to start for Arsenal vs Man Utd

GABRIEL JESUS and Viktor Gyokeres were both on the scoresheet in Arsenal’s win over Inter Milan on Tuesday night.

But the stats from the San Siro show Jesus would be a better choice for the Gunners ahead of their crucial clash against Man United on Sunday.

Mikel Arteta‘s side secured a 3-1 victory against the Serie A outfit thanks to a brilliant first-half brace from Jesus.

The Brazilian’s display heaped pressure on Gyokeres, who started on the bench, following just one goal in his last ten matches.

But the £63.5million signing silenced his recent critics by curling a superb finish into the top corner to put gloss on Arsenal‘s win.

Gyokeres has started Arsenal’s last eight games in the Premier League, but the re-emergence of Jesus means he now has fierce competition.

And Jesus’ display against Inter will certainly do his chances of starting against United no harm.

He played 75 minutes, scoring both of his two shots, winning four duels and having 28 touches in total.

CHARLIE WYETT’S VERDICT ON GABRIEL JESUS VS VIKTOR GYOKERES

“Ultimately, big decision for Mikel Arteta to make now, is he going to stick with Gabriel Jesus for Sunday’s game against Manchester United or does he stick Viktor Gyökeres back in the team with the confidence boosting goal, his ninth since joining the club from Sporting Lisbon?

“Big, big choice for Arteta, I know what I’d do and I’d stick Gabriel Jesus back in the team because Arsenal look better with him.”

Jesus had an expected goals of 1.29 and also did his bit creatively by creating two chances and making ten successful passes into the opposition half.

By comparison, Gyokeres also had two shots, winning one duel and having eight touches.

The Swede had just two carries compared to six from Jesus, making just two passes into the opposition half.

And his expected goals was just 0.2, with his goal struck from a distance.

Of course, Gyokeres did have much less time on the pitch than Jesus, playing for the final 15 minutes.

But their heat maps are like night and day, with Jesus’ graphic showing how he ran into the channels, dropped deep and covered plenty of ground.

Gyokeres’ map, meanwhile, highlighted how he mainly stayed in the centre of the pitch.

It will be a tough decision to decide who starts against Michael Carrick‘s side this weekend, though Gyokeres is Arsenal’s top scorer in the league with five.
