419 now plenty in church — Bishop Oyedepo

GistReel

Bishop David Oyedepo, founder of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, also known as Winners Chapel, has raised concern over the growing activities of fraudsters across society, including within churches.

The popular cleric shared a recent experience involving an individual who allegedly impersonated him to scam unsuspecting people, describing it as a sign of troubling times.

Impersonation Attempt Exposed

Bishop Oyedepo disclosed the incident while preaching during a midweek church service, where he narrated how the suspected fraudster tried to misuse his identity.

According to him, the individual contacted one of his assistants, falsely claiming to be Bishop Oyedepo and making certain demands.

“We had an experience some time back when someone was claiming to be me and that I was asking for something,” he told the congregation.

The attempt failed after his assistant chose to verify the claim before taking any action.

“My assistant called and the person said, ‘Can I speak to Bishop Oyedepo?’ My assistant said yes, you can talk to him,” he explained.

Bishop Oyedepo said the impersonator was caught off guard and immediately exposed by the call.

“He could not wait to make findings and ended up cursing himself,” the cleric added.

Warning on Growing Fraud

Using the incident as a lesson, Bishop Oyedepo warned that fraudsters are now operating boldly, even within religious spaces.

He noted that criminal activities are no longer limited to markets or offices, but have spread into churches and schools.

“That is the world we live in today. 419 plenty in church, plenty in market, school and everywhere,” he said.

Call for Discernment

The cleric urged worshippers and the wider public to remain alert and discerning at all times.

He advised people to verify information properly and avoid acting on unconfirmed requests, no matter who is mentioned.

“Walk in the truth and you will never be trapped,” Bishop Oyedepo concluded.
