Man stirs debate over replacing flowers with cash in Nigerian dating culture

A Nigerian man has stirred conversations online after criticising the growing trend of replacing flowers with cash as a romantic gesture in relationships.

In a viral statement shared on social media, the man argued that the act of giving flowers is meant to symbolise intentional love and affection, not financial support.

According to him, the moment people began substituting flowers with money marked a deeper problem within the dating space.

“The moment una start to remove flower put am money, na there I know say problem don dey our relationship dating space,” he said. He explained that flowers are meant to represent intention and emotional commitment, rather than material value.

He further traced the origin of flower-giving to Western cultures, noting that while the gesture was adopted in Nigeria, its meaning has been altered. “The oyibo wey start am na so them start am. E reach Nigeria people turn dey remove flower chuk money inside,” he added.

The man added that the shift reflects misplaced priorities, suggesting that people now express relationships based on what they lack rather than genuine affection. “People go always express themselves according to wetin dem dey lack, no be love. No be love una dey lack, na money una really need,” he said.
