Jim James Ovia, a notable businessman, philanthropist, and novelist, was born on November 4, 1951, in Agbor, Delta State, Nigeria. After his father died when he was four years old, his older siblings supported him in school.

He eventually relocated to Lagos, worked as a bank clerk, and attended higher school in the United States. He is widely regarded as Nigeria’s “Godfather of Banking” and the founder and chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, one of Africa’s largest and most successful banks.

While growing up, young Jim Ovia was constantly undecided about his professional path and was persuaded by his uncle to study business administration. He became who he is now by following his uncle’s advice and working hard.

In 1973, Ovia began working as a clerk at Union Bank (previously Barclays Bank). This occurred shortly after he graduated secondary school. He worked as a bank clerk for three years before moving to the United States, where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.

He eventually developed a strong interest in computer science and information technology. He worked as a part-time computer operator at the bankrupt Baton Rouge Bank and Trust Company. After graduation, he joined Union Bank to finish his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). He also worked for Lion Bank, rising to the position of branch manager in Lagos.

Soon after, Jim Ovia joined International Merchant Bank (IMB) in 1980 and was promoted from financial analyst to bank manager.

After leaving IMB, he joined Merchant Bank of Africa, where he established a successful corporate division. Talk about relentlessly ascending the corporate ladder! Needless to say, the sky became his starting point from there on.

Following the deregulation of the banking sector under Babangida’s administration in the late 1980s, Jim Ovia and some investors founded Zenith Bank in 1990.

He led the bank for 20 years before resigning in July 2010. He was reappointed as the bank’s chairman in 2014.

Zenith Bank expanded under his leadership and is now the largest financial services provider in Nigeria and Anglophone West Africa. The bank provides a variety of corporate investment, business, and personal banking services and solutions.

Its headquarters are at Victoria Island, Lagos, and it has over 500 branches and offices throughout the country. Zenith Bank became a public limited company in 2001 and is listed on both the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) and the London Stock Exchange (LSE).

On April 27, 2007, Zenith Bank PLC became the first Nigerian bank in 25 years to be licensed by the UK Financial Services Authority (FSA), resulting in Zenith Bank UK Limited. The bank also has subsidiaries in Ghana, Sierra Leone, Gambia, South Africa, and China.

Jim Ovia turned Zenith Bank, a tiny commercial bank, into a financial services behemoth. He has created a distinctive corporate identity for the bank by combining technology and dependable client service.

Ovia is also an author and motivational speaker. He released his debut book, ‘Africa Rise and Shine’, in September 2018. Africa Rise And Shine is Jim Ovia’s memoir. He revealed everything in Africa Rise And Shine, including his business success secrets and how he founded one of Africa’s major banks. The book was published in the United States by Forbes Books in South California.
