I stopped talking to a lady because of ₦50 — Man reveals

A Nigerian student has stirred debate online after revealing he ended a budding relationship over ₦50, insisting that “every naira matters” in his current financial reality.

The young man shared his experience on X, formerly known as Twitter, explaining how a casual outing for shawarma exposed what he described as a major red flag.

Shawarma, Change and a Comment That Sparked It All

According to his post, he and the lady had gone off campus to buy shawarma. The vendor charged ₦2,950, and he paid ₦3,000, receiving ₦50 as change.

As they walked away, he said he was holding both the shawarma and the change when the lady casually collected the ₦50 from his hand.

“She said, ‘You’re the man now.’ I laughed. Thought she was joking. She wasn’t,” he wrote.

What appeared playful at first later turned serious. He explained that she revisited the issue that same evening.

“Later that evening she actually said, ‘Next time you should just budget properly so you’re not collecting change.’”

“₦50 Today Is Pure Water Tomorrow”

The student made it clear that the remark did not sit well with him. For him, the issue went beyond the physical ₦50.

“Collecting change?? Madam, I am a student. ₦50 today is pure water tomorrow. It’s part of the financial strategy,” he stated.

He said the comment made him rethink the compatibility of their values. In his view, dismissing ₦50 suggested a deeper misunderstanding about money management.

“From that moment I just started seeing red flags everywhere. If ₦50 is nothing to you, what about ₦500? ₦5k? My future salary?” he added.

Rather than confront her, he chose a quieter route. “I didn’t argue. I just slowly reduced communication. Exams suddenly became very important.”

The post has since attracted mixed reactions from users. Some defended the student, arguing that financial discipline is important, especially in Nigeria’s tough economy.

Others felt he overreacted, saying the lady may have only been teasing and that communication could have resolved the misunderstanding.
