Mosque drama as Imam accused of ₦600k extortion, forced to refund after evidence emerges

Tension reportedly erupted within a mosque community after an Imam was accused of collecting ₦600,000 from a woman under the guise of spiritual consultation.

The account was shared by a netizen identified on X as @MasterMaliq.

According to a witness who is part of the mosque committee, the woman initially faced strong opposition when she reported the matter. Members allegedly dismissed her claims, accusing her of trying to damage the Imam’s reputation and refusing to hear her out.

However, the situation took a different turn when evidence was requested. The woman presented proof that all payments were made via bank transfers, prompting a direct comparison with the Imam’s account records.

When confronted and asked to justify the payments, the Imam was reportedly unable to provide a clear explanation. The committee then demanded a full refund, which he agreed to.

@MasterMaliq wrote …

“Once, our Imam was accused of extorting ₦600k from a woman for spiritual consultation regarding her barrenness. The woman discovered the deception and reported it to the mosque authority, of which I am a member.

The response was overwhelmingly against her. People shunned her, accusing her of trying to tarnish the Imam’s reputation and suggesting she was paid to do so. It became so intense that the woman started crying because no one was willing to listen to her.

While the mosque committee was busy reprimanding and shunning the woman, I stayed silent, observing them as they defended the indefensible. When they finished, I turned to the woman and asked if she had evidence of the payments. She confirmed she had made all transactions through bank transfers.

I then addressed the Imam, asking him to print his statement of account while the woman printed hers. We highlighted all the transactions, and I asked the Imam what he had sold to the woman to justify the ₦600k. The Imam was left speechless. We demanded he return every single kobo to the woman, and he agreed.

I chose not to defend our Imam even though I am a Muslim. Truth and justice must transcend personal loyalties and cultural affiliations. To blindly defend someone, be it an Imam or tribesman, simply because of shared faith or heritage, is to undermine the very principles of integrity and fairness. We must let the evidence speak for itself and uphold justice, no matter the personal cost.”
