Assassin Creed Black Flag Remake Confirmed

Ubisoft has released a “brand update” for the Assassin Creed black flag remake series, which includes the latest advancements on various upcoming games, as well as a live-action TV program for Netflix.

A graphic for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Resynced was included in the breakdown, which practically confirms that a remaster/remake of Black Flag is in the works, as previously rumoured.

This announcement comes shortly after Ubisoft placed new leadership for the Assassin’s Creed brand at Vantage Studios, as well as the news that Ubisoft veteran Clint Hocking has left the company and is no longer the top executive on one of the most anticipated future Assassin’s Creed titles, Hexe.

Jean Guesdon, Ubisoft’s head of content for Assassin’s Creed, announced the upgrades today.

Here’s all the important information you should know about any game or project in development.

The game is approaching its first anniversary, and Guesdon praised fans for their support despite numerous delays and scandals. According to Ubisoft, the game’s success contributed to the general growth of the Assassin’s Creed brand in 2025.

Looking ahead, Ubisoft stated that Shadows is currently entering the “final phase of support.” This means “smaller, less frequent” game updates, as well as “a few surprises.””

Codename Hexe

Codename Hexe is advertised as a “unique, darker, narrative-driven” Assassin’s Creed game set during a “pivotal moment in history.” That’s all we know for now, although Guesdon confirmed that the game is still under development at Ubisoft Montreal and that he will take over as creative director from Hocking.

Hexe will remain silent for a while to execute on its ambitious objective. However, the company is excited to share more information when the time comes.

Codename Invictus

Codename Invictus, an Assassin’s Creed multiplayer PvP game, is being developed alongside Hexe at Ubisoft Montreal by a team of For Honour veterans. Guesdon noted there is a “lot of curiosity” regarding Invictus, noting “it’s a new approach to multiplayer in the franchise, but it isn’t quite what the rumours have suggested.”

He continued: “With player feedback at the heart of our strategy, we’re looking into methods to pull the community in earlier so we can build the experience together.

The crew is tremendously passionate about what they’re creating, and their work matches our overarching goal of providing a larger range of experiences within the Assassin’s Creed universe.”

Assassin’s Creed Jade and others

Beyond Hexe and Invictus, Guesdon stated that Ubisoft is now working on “several” new Assassin’s Creed titles, “all at different stages of development.” One example is the smartphone game Assassin’s Creed Jade. Another Assassin’s Creed game could have co-op.

Guesdon continued: “We’re also still looking into bringing co-op back to Assassin’s Creed, a detail we know didn’t go unnoticed.” Guesdon also stated that Ubisoft “chose to pivot away” from a new Assassin’s Creed game that was “early” in production.

He did not offer anything else, but did say that the team gained lessons from the process that are “already helping shape our approach going forward.”

What about the rumored Black Flag remake/remaster?

“What matters most to us is giving each project the time it deserves and releasing it when it is ready.” This could be a reference to Ubisoft’s recent news that it had cancelled six games without naming them specifically. What about the rumoured Black Flag remake or remaster? Evidence of such a game has leaked all over the place.

The blog post revealing all of these new features included a picture of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag: Remastered, the rumoured name of the next remake/remaster.

“Speculation about Assassin’s Creed is not new, but it bears repeating: ‘Nothing is true. Everything is acceptable. Except in this situation, certain whispers have a little extra wind in their sails.

“Keep your spyglass on the horizon,” Guesdon remarked, alluding to the Black Flag rumours. It has been reported that the rumoured Black Flag remake/remaster was one of the seven games Ubisoft postponed earlier this year.

Older Assassin’s Creed games

Older Assassin’s Creed games continue to sell, and Guesdon says Ubisoft recognises “how much those titles mean to many of you.” Guesdon stated that a free 60fps patch for Assassin’s Creed Unity will be available on March 5 for PS5 and Xbox One (there was no mention of Assassin’s Creed Series X|S).

Ubisoft has stated that “multiple” Assassin’s Creed games will be included in the Xbox Free Play Days promotion, with gamers able to play select older titles, including Unity, for free from April 2 to 6.

Assassin’s Creed Netflix series

In addition to the new Assassin’s Creed games, Ubisoft has a live-action Assassin’s Creed TV program in development at Netflix. Guesdon said fans should expect updates “very soon.”

He stated, “We can’t wait for you to learn more. Something tells us you won’t have to wait too long. The Netflix show was announced in 2020, and Ubisoft also revealed that it was developing a brand-new Assassin’s Creed game for Netflix Games.

We still don’t know anything about it, and Guesdon’s update today didn’t provide any insight.

Major changes at Ubisoft lately

This upgrade to the Assassin’s Creed franchise comes just after Ubisoft experienced considerable changes, thanks in part to its alliance with Tencent.

As part of the restructure, Ubisoft formed a new company, Vantage Studios, which was partially funded by Tencent, and established a new “Creative House” to supervise Ubisoft’s flagship titles.

The changes also caused anguish for the people who worked there, as Ubisoft implemented a significant cost-cutting initiative that resulted in layoffs, game cancellations, and studio closures.

Furthermore, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot appointed his own son, Charlie Guillemot, as co-CEO of Vantage, raising nepotism issues. Ubisoft employees have also taken to the streets to protest the company’s management, with some calling for Yves Guillemot’s resignation.
