Just born pikin, the pikin go grow, this marriage thing no dey work — Timaya

Nigerian music star Timaya has stirred debate on social media after sharing his blunt opinion about marriage during a recent video clip.

In the short clip circulating online, the singer suggested that some men should avoid marriage entirely and instead focus on having children.

According to him: “Just born pikin, the pikin go grow, this marriage thing no dey work.”

His comment quickly went viral, triggering mixed reactions from fans and social media users who shared differing views about relationships, parenting, and marriage.

Mixed Reactions From Social Media Users

Several people disagreed with the singer’s suggestion, warning that avoiding marriage could lead to loneliness later in life.

A user identified as Chief & Queen wrote that while being a “baby daddy” might appear easier at first, it could have emotional consequences later.

He said: “Being a ‘baby daddy’ might seem easier in the short term, but once the kids grow up and leave, he’s left without a partner or emotional support. Marriage isn’t perfect, but it can provide companionship, shared responsibilities, and someone to navigate life’s ups and downs with.

Timaya’s advice might get laughs now, but the long-term loneliness risk is real. That’s the thing people often overlook.”

Another commenter, Sir Bull, argued that the problem might be linked to relationship dynamics in Nigeria.

He wrote: “That’s a marriage with Nigerian women. Travel out, date Asian women and see what love is all about. Date foreign women who understand the concept of love.”

Okoye also shared a balanced view, saying the singer’s opinion simplifies a complex issue.

He said: “Timaya’s advice is… bold, but oversimplified. Marriage isn’t “broken” by default it requires communication, commitment, and mutual growth.

Encouraging men to just have kids without nurturing a partnership might solve one thing but create a host of other emotional and financial challenges.

In short: Marriage isn’t dead, but it does take effort and skipping that effort comes with real consequences.”

Another user, Marvis, suggested that respect and loyalty between partners are key factors in making relationships work.

According to the comment: “Is getting married actually the problem? Partners of nowadays don’t know how to give respect to each other, loyalty and support. Ladies are marrying for money nowadays not even love.”
