Wedding gifts, money belong to the wife, not the husband — Lady

A video circulating widely on social media has sparked fresh debate about money sprayed at wedding ceremonies after a lady claimed that such funds belong solely to the bride.

In the viral clip, the lady insisted that grooms should not consider the money sprayed during weddings, or gifts presented at the ceremony, as something they have control over.

Her remarks have triggered mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians sharing different cultural and personal views about wedding traditions.

Debate Over Ownership of Wedding Sprayed Money

Speaking in the video, the woman argued that once money is sprayed during a wedding celebration, it automatically belongs to the bride.

According to her, the groom has no authority over those funds, regardless of who sprayed the money or where the gifts came from.

“A groom has no business with the monies that was sprayed at their wedding ceremony or the gifts that was present to him and his wife during their wedding ceremony,” she said.

She further explained that even if the groom’s family members, friends, or invited guests were responsible for spraying the money, the ownership still rests with the bride.

“Those things, the money and the gifts, they belong to the bride which is his wife. Even if those things, the money and the gifts came from the people from the side or the family or the people he invited or his friends, everything belong to the bride,” she added.

Husband Can Only Assist With Counting

In the video, the woman also explained that the husband may only assist the bride in counting the money if she asks for help.

However, she stressed that whatever decision the bride makes regarding the money afterwards should not concern the groom.

“After the wedding ceremony, if the wife needs his help to count the money, he can go and help her but whatever his wife decide to do with the money is none of his business,” she said.

Claims About Paying Wedding Vendors

The woman also challenged a common belief that balances owed to vendors should be paid from the money sprayed during the celebration.

According to her, expenses such as event planning, decorations, makeup services, and the Master of Ceremonies should not be settled with that money.

She maintained that the groom should pay such balances using funds he set aside for the wedding.

“And there is popular notion that the people that put the event together which are the event planner, decoration, the woman make up, MC, whatever, all those people, their balance suppose to be paid from that money which is not true,” she said.

“The man can balance those people from the money he put aside for the wedding ceremony.”
