Nigerian actor and comedian Francis Odega has opened up on how he created the now-famous phrase “Gerara Here.”

Speaking in a recent interview, Odega explained that the line was not originally part of the movie script but was improvised by him during filming in Umuahia. The film featured actors like Bishop Umoh and the late Dede One Day.

According to him, the script initially required a simple pidgin expression meaning “leave here,” but he creatively modified it to “Gerara Here” to reflect a returnee from South Africa trying to sound more polished while speaking to villagers.

He added that he also introduced other lines such as “You don’t know nothing” to enhance the character’s personality and make the dialogue more memorable.

Odega’s improvisation would later go viral, turning “Gerara Here” into a widely recognized catchphrase that boosted his popularity both locally and internationally.

His words …

“Gerara Here was actually from a movie I made in Umuahia with Bishop Okon, and the late Dede One Day. However, there was no line like Gerara here in the movie script, I crafted it myself. I can show you the script. There was nothing like “Hold up, N*gg@”, ‘You don’t know nothing’ na me put am myself. The movie was about returning from south Africa and normally you know say if you dey speak English give villagers after you return from South Africa, you no go dey use pidgin na. That’s why I used that ‘You don’t know nothing’. The script wanted us to use the pidgin ‘Comot here’ so I changed it to ‘grara here.’ but the guy no kuku understand, so add am for Igbo, ‘Si ebe a puo’.”
