Arsenal moved a step closer to the Premier League title after a dramatic 1-0 victory over West Ham United, with VAR controversially ruling out a stoppage-time equaliser from Callum Wilson.

Trossard ends goal drought with decisive strike

After a tense contest at the London Stadium, Leandro Trossard finally broke the deadlock late in the second half to hand the Gunners a potentially title-defining victory.

The Belgian forward had earlier been denied twice, first by goalkeeper Mads Hermansen and then by the woodwork, before eventually ending his 25-game scoring drought with a composed finish into the bottom corner.

Arsenal’s momentum was briefly disrupted after Ben White picked up an injury, while the visitors also saw strong appeals for a handball penalty waved away.

Raya heroics and VAR controversy seal win

At the other end, David Raya produced a crucial save to deny Mateus Fernandes when the West Ham midfielder appeared certain to score.

The major drama arrived deep into stoppage time when Wilson bundled the ball over the line after West Ham goalkeeper Hermansen joined the attack for a late corner.

However, after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was ruled out for a foul on Raya in the build-up, sparking controversy around the stadium.

Arsenal tighten grip on title race

The victory keeps Mikel Arteta’s side firmly in control of the Premier League title race as Arsenal continue their push for a first league crown in 22 years.

The defeat also leaves West Ham’s relegation concerns growing, while the result could indirectly aid Tottenham Hotspur in their battle to avoid the drop.
