Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has praised Mikel Merino after the midfielder came off the bench to score the stoppage-time winner that sealed a 1-0 victory over Portugal and sent La Roja into the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Merino struck in the 91st minute in Dallas after being set up by fellow substitute Ferran Torres, ending a tense Round of 16 contest and eliminating Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal.

Reflecting on the victory, De la Fuente said Spain’s substitutes made the difference in a match he described as one worthy of a final.

“It was truly a fantastic game, a final before the final, and, as expected, we suffered until the very end,” De la Fuente said.

“We played a very complete game, and the most important players are those who come off the bench. I told Merino to play as always, to support in midfield and attack. We were thinking of giving them a bit more rhythm to face extra time. The players’ contribution has been masterful.”

Coach backs Yamal and Rodri

The Spain manager reserved special praise for Merino, revealing the long-standing relationship he has built with the Arsenal midfielder through the national team’s youth ranks.

“I’m very happy for him. I have a great affection for all the players, but with Mikel Merino there’s something special because we’ve known each other for a long time.”

“If necessary, I’d go to pick him up at his house. He’s world-class. Mikel never disappoints; he’s a safe bet.”

De la Fuente also defended teenage winger Lamine Yamal, insisting the Barcelona youngster produced one of his finest performances despite facing tough opposition.

“I think he played one of his best games; it’s a very important day for his growth.”

“He instilled fear. It’s one of the best games in Lamine’s history… and there’s more to come.”

The coach also highlighted the influence of midfielder Rodri.

“Rodri is the guiding light of this team. A player with an exceptional presence. He provides balance. He’s the best player in the world in his position.”

Spain will now face Belgium in the World Cup quarter-finals after the Red Devils defeated the United States 4-1.

Looking ahead, De la Fuente insisted his side remain focused regardless of the opponent.

“We don’t care who we face. We’re happy to be in the quarter-finals and we’re going to give it our all until the end. Our opponents will have to beat us.”
