Switzerland edge Colombia on penalties to set up Argentina quarter-final clash

Switzerland defeated Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a goalless 120 minutes to book their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ruben Vargas converted the decisive spot-kick to send the Swiss through after a tense contest in Vancouver, where clear-cut chances were scarce for much of the match.

Switzerland will now face defending champions Argentina, who earlier completed a dramatic comeback to beat Egypt 3-2.

Penalties settle tightly contested tie

Both sides entered the match without their first-choice centre-forwards after injury ruled out Switzerland’s Johan Manzambi and Colombia’s Jhon Cordoba.

The best opportunities in normal time were shared between the teams. Colombia midfielder Gustavo Puerta forced Gregor Kobel into an impressive save midway through the first half, while Camilo Vargas denied Fabian Rieder and Dan Ndoye at the other end.

The contest remained evenly balanced after the break, with Switzerland enjoying more possession but struggling to break down Colombia’s disciplined defence.

James Rodriguez, making his 131st appearance for Colombia, was unable to influence the tie before being substituted in the second half.

Vargas sends Swiss through

The game opened up in extra time as both teams searched for a breakthrough.

Colombia came closest when Jhon Lucumi’s powerful header struck the crossbar before Kobel produced another important save to deny Jaminton Campaz from distance.

Switzerland also threatened, but Vargas kept his side in the contest with an excellent stop to prevent substitute Zeki Amdouni from scoring.

With neither side able to find a winner, the match was decided from the penalty spot.

The shootout was briefly interrupted by a confrontation involving Yerry Mina, Granit Xhaka and Manuel Akanji before the kicks resumed.

Davinson Sanchez and Akanji both missed for their respective teams, leaving the outcome finely balanced until Vargas stepped forward to score the decisive penalty and seal Switzerland’s passage into the last eight.

The victory sends Switzerland into the World Cup quarter-finals, where they will meet Argentina in Kansas City for a place in the semi-finals.
