Nigerian skitmaker and content creator Zicsaloma has urged young people to acquire practical skills, warning that depending on begging or handouts is not a sustainable way to survive.

His comments were made in a viral video that has sparked discussions on social media about unemployment, self-development and financial independence.

The comedian argued that having no valuable skill significantly reduces a person’s chances of earning a steady income.

He stressed that learning a trade or developing a professional ability is the first step towards building wealth.

‘You do not stand a chance without a skill’

In the video, Zicsaloma criticised what he described as the growing number of young people who lack practical skills despite holding university degrees.

“You know, you can’t have money if you’re not doing anything. Like you’re redundant. You don’t have a skill. You don’t stand a chance. Or your chance is almost zero.”

He said many people cannot drive, cook, use computers or perform other employable tasks.

“You can’t drive. You can’t cook. You’re not a chef. You are not computer literate. You don’t know graphic design. You don’t do AI. You done nothing.”

He also expressed concern that some graduates are unable to apply what they studied in school.

“Some of you even though they’re graduates. You don’t even know what you studied. So you studied English, you can’t even construct proper sentences. You studied accountancy. You don’t know how to bookkeep.”

Begging is not a long-term solution

Zicsaloma said he regularly receives messages from people asking him for financial assistance on social media. According to him, one particular person had been requesting money for months.

He explained that after asking the individual what they could do for a living, the response was simply “nothing.”

“I said what can you do… The person said nothing. What can you do? The person could not think of anything.”

He warned that constantly depending on others for money would eventually push people away.

“Nobody will keep giving you money forever. You always be a burden to people. People always run away from you.”

Focus on learning a trade

Rather than asking people for money, the skitmaker encouraged young people to seek mentors who can teach them valuable skills.

He suggested learning trades such as hairdressing, barbering, driving or becoming a chef, adding that mastering any skill could create opportunities for financial success.

“Instead of disturbing people for money, disturb people you can learn skills from… You could be a chef, you could be a driver. Just start from somewhere.”

He concluded by reminding viewers that earning an income comes before investing or starting a business.

“Your goal should be a skill… Learn properly. You can become a millionaire from that skill. Just know that if you’re at home and you’re redundant, you do not stand a chance.”
