Writhing Squares has lengthy been the duo of Kevin Nickles and Daniel Provenzano accompanied by a drum machine, each within the studio and stay. However for his or her most up-to-date album, Mythology, they modified issues up a bit with a stay drummer by bringing on board John Schoemaker. Embarking on a brief tour for the album, the band introduced alongside David Joachim to drum stay. After a launch present of their hometown of Philadelphia (which you’ll watch on YouTube) the trio hit Tubby’s at full quantity. Most of their set hails from the aforementioned Mythology, plus “NFU” from Chart For the Answer and “Steely Eyed Missile Man” from Out of the Ether. There’s one thing ineffable in regards to the Writhing Squares sound, particularly of their pummeling stay present. Whereas Chart For the Answer conjures The Operating Man with its dystopian Krautrock, Mythology is tougher to pin down. It wasn’t till their ultimate track, a canopy, that I spotted what they had been channeling: the band leans in exhausting to their prog roots with a heavy, vigorous tackle King Crimson’s “twenty first Century Schizoid Man.” There aren’t many bands that would pull off such a feat—all hail Writhing Squares!
I recorded this from our normal location at Tubby’s with a board feed from FOH, Will. As normally Tubby’s sounds nice underneath Will’s boardwork and this recording displays that. Take pleasure in!
