Lagos seizes alcoholic drinks from avenue merchants to curb drunk driving

Officers of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps impounded alcoholic drinks bought by avenue merchants to drivers at Olupese Terminal Park and Oshodi-Bolade Garages on Tuesday.

The state Commissioner, Ministry of the Atmosphere and Water Sources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a press release on X.com.

Wahab acknowledged that the clampdown was to curb the rising variety of street accidents attributable to drunk driving.

He wrote, “As a part of concerted efforts undertaken by the state authorities to mitigate the pattern of alcohol consumption by business drivers throughout totally different parks and garages within the state as found to be a major set off for motor accidents, the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps popularly referred to as KAI impounded alcoholic drinks throughout a raid on Olupese Terminal Park and Oshodi-Bolade Garages on Tuesday.”

The Corps Marshal, Main Olaniyi Cole (retd.), was additionally mentioned to have warned avenue merchants and hawkers to stop their actions, that are unlawful below state legislation.

“He maintained that the resolve of the company within the conflict in opposition to avenue buying and selling, displaying wares on the market in visitors on walkways, setbacks, lay-bys, gutter slabs, street verges, and medians will likely be sustained and defaulters will likely be met with stiff opposition,” the assertion added.

The Lagos State Authorities has, in several operations, intensified its marketing campaign in opposition to avenue buying and selling, demolishing shanties, and ejecting roadside merchants.
