12 Monkeys Discovered Its Composer By Flipping A Coin

Paul Buckmaster was a widely known presence within the rock world, having labored on orchestrations with David Bowie, The Grateful Lifeless, Leonard Cohen, Miles Davis, Weapons N’ Roses, Taylor Swift, The Rolling Stones, Celine Dion, and several other others. In movie, Buckmaster had carried out songs for Roman Polanski’s “Macbeth,” Harry Nilsson’s horrible oddity “Son of Dracula,” and “The Man Who Fell to Earth.” “12 Monkeys” was to be his first movie composition work for a venture that wasn’t a musical or starring a musician.

Thomas Newman, in the meantime, was already a prolific composer by 1995, having written the scores to notable movies like “Revenge of the Nerds,” “Actual Genius,” “The Misplaced Boys,” “Fried Inexperienced Tomatoes,” “The Participant,” “The Shawshank Redemption” and dozens of others. He was nimble, prolific, and gifted. It was Madeleine Stowe who talked about Newman to Gilliam, as she heard he was having hassle deciding on a composer. Gilliam liked Newman, which posed a problem as to whom he ought to rent. Stowe tells the story thus:

“We have been discussing who he needed to attain it. I stated, ‘Please, please take a look at this fellow named Thomas Newman.’ I used to be an enormous Thomas Newman fan. Terry stated, ‘Nicely, I’ve already type of dedicated [to Buckmaster],’ however he met him. They flew him to London, and he fell in love with Thomas. So he did not know what to do. The best way he had to decide on between the 2 males, was he flipped a coin.”

Given the off-kilter tone of “12 Monkeys,” maybe a composer from the non-film world was extra acceptable than a extra “conventional” movie composer. Apologies to Stowe, nonetheless, who misplaced her most popular composer within the coin flip. Buckmaster would solely compose one different film, and it was, curiously, “Most Wished” in 1997. Newman, in the meantime, went on to attain movies for Pixar and the James Bond franchise.
