Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has approved a major increase in the monthly allowances of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state.

The allowance has been raised from ₦4,000 to as much as ₦50,000 per month.

According to a statement released on Friday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Njoku Ukoha, every corps member serving in Abia will now receive a base allowance of ₦20,000.

Additional Pay for Teachers and Health Workers

Corps members deployed to state government offices will get an extra ₦10,000 monthly, while those serving as medical or teaching staff will receive an additional ₦30,000.

Ukoha explained that the new structure complements the Federal Government’s ₦77,000 NYSC allowance and fits into Governor Otti’s wider plan to promote youth empowerment and strengthen the public sector.

“This is the first major adjustment in 27 years and reflects Governor Otti’s dedication to youth development and capacity building in Abia,” the statement read.

Supporting Youth Service and Infrastructure

The government noted that the increment is part of ongoing reforms aimed at making national service more rewarding and encouraging young professionals to contribute to Abia’s growth.

It added that Otti’s administration has continued to support corps members by upgrading facilities at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Bende Local Government Area, including improved roads, electricity, and camp infrastructure.

“The governor believes that every facility within Abia, whether state or federally owned, deserves attention because it benefits Abians,” Ukoha said.

Commitment to Workforce and Development

The Abia government has also implemented the Consolidated Health Salary Structure for state health workers and extended it to local government employees to match federal standards.

Around 35 per cent of the state’s budget reportedly goes to healthcare and education — sectors described as vital pillars for human capital development and institutional growth.

“Governor Otti’s latest decision clearly shows that Abia State is serious about empowering youth, rewarding excellence, and building a state where service is valued,” the statement added.
