Barnes Scores Twice as Newcastle Stun Manchester City

Harvey Barnes lit up St James’ Park with a match-winning performance as Newcastle United edged Manchester City in a thrilling Premier League showdown.

Barnes opened the scoring and later poked home the decisive goal inside a packed, deafening St James’ Park to deliver a memorable win for Eddie Howe’s side.

Rúben Dias had briefly pulled City level when his shot deflected off Fabian Schär after Newcastle failed to clear a corner, but the hosts responded almost instantly.

Jacob Murphy whipped a dangerous cross into the box, Bruno Guimarães’ header crashed off the bar, and Barnes reacted quickest to hook the ball in. After a lengthy VAR check for offside, the goal stood — and the stadium exploded again.

It was exactly the reaction Howe demanded after the painful 3–1 defeat to Brentford before the international break, and it earned Newcastle a rare victory over Pep Guardiola’s City.

City, meanwhile, will look back on missed opportunities. A win would have cut Arsenal’s lead at the top to one point, but they failed to convert key chances and were furious with several refereeing decisions — including a strong first-half penalty appeal after Phil Foden went down under Schär’s challenge.

Erling Haaland also endured a frustrating night. Nick Pope denied him from close range after Nico O’Reilly’s cut-back, and the Norwegian’s attempted chip drifted wide earlier in the match. His quest to become the fastest player to reach 100 Premier League goals continues.

But this was Newcastle’s night — and Howe’s first Premier League win over Manchester City.

Newcastle Analysis: Barnes Leads the Fightback

Only weeks ago, Newcastle looked fragile and disjointed at Brentford. But instead of ringing wholesale changes, Howe trusted his core players to redeem themselves — and they delivered.

Newcastle rediscovered their trademark energy:
– Guimarães set the tone with aggressive midfield battles
– Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall surged up and down the wings
– Malick Thiaw stood firm against Haaland

Yet it was Harvey Barnes who embodied their resilience most.

He missed two big first-half chances — including one where he fired wide with the goal wide open — but instead of shrinking, he responded brilliantly after the break.

Barnes struck a crisp opener from outside the box, then showed composure again to score the winner after City equalised. For a side that has dropped more points from winning positions (nine) than any other Premier League team this season, this was a massive moment.

The standing ovation as he left the pitch said it all. So did the fans chanting “Barnes will tear you apart again” as they poured out of the stadium.

This was a huge result.

City Analysis: Missed Chance, Officiating Fury, and Haaland’s Bad Day

For Manchester City and Erling Haaland, it was an afternoon to forget.

City stay third after failing to close the gap on Arsenal, who face Spurs in the North London derby. Haaland, fresh from firing Norway to the World Cup and scoring 32 goals in 20 games for club and country this season, remained stuck on 99 Premier League goals.

He endured a rare off day:
– Chose to shoot instead of rounding Pope for a clear chance
– Sent a weak header straight at the keeper
– Saw a close-range effort smothered by Pope
– Went scoreless for just the third time this season

Barnes’ winner also brought VAR controversy. Craig Pawson took nearly five minutes to confirm the goal, with initial replays not showing the offside lines. A later screenshot appeared to show Guimarães onside.
