Protesters who chant globalise the intifada could face jail under new law

PROTESTERS who chant “globalise the intifada” could be locked up for six months under a proposed new law.

It comes in the wake of the Bondi beach attack — in which two gunmen killed 15 people at a family Chanukah event in Sydney, Australia.

Police in London and Manchester announced they would finally start arresting people who spout the hate-filled chant.

But other cops have stayed silent and it is unclear if the CPS will actually prosecute those arrested.

A group of peers in the House of Lords are now proposing a law change which would specifically criminalise chants that promote violence — including “globalise the intifada”.

The word intifada means uprising or rebellion, and is most commonly associated with Palestinian armed uprisings — including terrorist killings of Israeli Jews.

The amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill will make it a new offence to promote or advance a holy or religious war or intifada.

Those found guilty should face up to six months in jail or a fine, it says.

Lord Jonathan Mendelsohn, a Labour peer who drafted it, said: “At the very extreme end these chants are calls to violence — even if they don’t commit the act.

“It is fuelling hostility, extremism and violence and undermining our democracy and we have to take firmer and tougher action. This Bill will deal with that.”

The Home Office have said they are reviewing powers to make sure the police have the tools they need to tackle these disgraceful chants.
