Young man sentenced to two years in prison for alleged phone theft

AdminBy AdminFebruary 7, 2026Updated:February 7, 2026No Comments2 Mins Read

A video showing the interrogation and sentencing of a young man identified as Ayuba has sparked widespread debate online after it emerged that he was sentenced to two years in prison for allegedly stealing a mobile phone.

In the footage, which lasts about one minute and 27 seconds, Ayuba is seen sitting on the floor, visibly distressed, as he responds to questions from an interrogator.

Court sentence triggers public backlash online

Speaking in broken English, he identifies himself and mentions associates named Lashif, Azim and Mohammed, whom he said worked nearby doing cleaning and manual labour.

When asked about the alleged theft, Ayuba appeared confused and repeatedly insisted he did not carry a bag.

Moments later, he was informed that he would be going to jail. In disbelief, he asked, “Why jail?” before confirming that he had been sentenced to two years in prison.

Despite the shock, Ayuba repeatedly thanked God, saying, “Thank God, thank God,” while explaining that after serving his sentence, he hoped to return to his mother’s side.

Social media users question justice and punishment

The video quickly triggered strong reactions on social media, with many Nigerians questioning the severity of the punishment.

Some users expressed sympathy, arguing that imprisonment was excessive for a minor offence and suggesting community service or rehabilitation instead.

Others used the case to highlight perceived inequality in the justice system. One commenter wrote that poor offenders are often publicly punished, while wealthy individuals accused of larger crimes rarely face similar consequences.

While opinions remain divided, the case has reignited conversations around justice, proportional punishment and the treatment of young offenders in Nigeria’s legal system.
