My top priority is to let police officers know citizens are the boss – Acting IGP Disu

The newly appointed Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has declared that his administration will prioritise accountability, human rights, and zero tolerance for corruption within the Nigeria Police Force.

Speaking on Wednesday, Disu described his appointment as unexpected and deeply emotional, expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for finding him worthy of the role.

Appointment Came as a Surprise

Disu said the President’s public acknowledgement of his past achievements nearly moved him to tears.

“The appointment means a lot to me… it came at a time I was not expecting it. That makes me give thanks to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for his magnanimity in seeing me fit to be appointed as the Inspector General of Police.”

He noted that the President’s remarks showed that officers’ performances are being closely monitored, adding that it served as a challenge to deliver results.

“It shows the President took his time to monitor officers working everywhere in the country… and it shows the President was throwing a challenge at me to go out there and do what I’m known for.”

Citizens Are the Boss

Outlining his immediate agenda, the Acting IGP said his first engagement with officers would focus on reorientation.

According to him, police officers must understand that they are accountable to the people.

“My top priority is one of the first lectures I’m going to have with my men. I’m going to talk to them and let them know that the citizens of the country are the boss.”

He stressed that no police force can succeed without public cooperation and trust.

Zero Tolerance for Corruption

Disu vowed to end impunity within the force and enforce strict adherence to human rights standards.

“I will let them know that the era of impunity is over. I will ensure that I train and encourage them to follow human rights standards. I will try to follow a regime of zero tolerance for corruption.”

He also promised to prioritise officers’ welfare, noting that motivated personnel perform better.

Tackling Insecurity

On security challenges such as banditry and insurgency, Disu acknowledged the efforts of officers already on the front lines.

“All I need to do is to channel their morale and their thoughts to make things better.”

His appointment follows the tenure of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, which was marked by public complaints over alleged corruption, human rights violations, and systemic impunity.

I will take the welfare of my men into consideration because people who are motivated put in their best. My men will know impunity is over. And there will be zero corruption.
