Cross River state Governor, Bassey Otu has unveiled a free bus service, titled “Xmas Free Transport Service,” aimed at easing transportation challenges during the festive season and supporting residents amid economic hardship.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Calabar on Monday, Otu, represented by his Deputy, Peter Odey, said it has become a tradition for his administration to provide free transport during festive periods, including Easter, to reduce travel costs and foster unity among residents.

Governor rolls out free festive transport

“It is a tradition for Governor Otu to roll out free bus services during festive periods, including Easter. This is to reduce transportation costs and promote unity among residents. This effort aligns with his People First mantra and the Carnival Calabar theme, ‘Traces of Time,’” he said.

The initiative will operate throughout the Calabar Festival, covering major streets in Calabar Municipality and extending to nearby towns.

Specific routes include Watt Market to Scanobo, Watt Market to Atimbo, and inter-local government routes such as Calabar to Ugep, Ikom, Abi, Obudu, and Ogoja. A ferry service from Calabar to Creek Town, Odukpani, will also be provided.

Residents encouraged to use the service

Governor Otu encouraged residents and visitors to make full use of the service while supporting and praying for the administration. He noted that the initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The free bus service is part of the state government’s broader strategy to ease festive travel, promote social cohesion, and ensure residents can participate fully in celebrations without the burden of transport costs.

Officials said the buses are fully operational and equipped to serve commuters safely during the peak festive period, highlighting the administration’s commitment to public welfare and convenience.

Residents have welcomed the move, describing it as a timely intervention that demonstrates the government’s responsiveness to community needs and its dedication to enhancing festive experiences across the state.
