They killed my husband after ransom a year after our wedding—Young widow demands electoral reform in Abuja

A young widow broke down in tears during a protest at the National Assembly in Abuja, drawing attention to the ongoing call for electoral reform in Nigeria.

She shared the traumatic experience of losing her husband to kidnappers just a year after their wedding, despite paying a ransom, and raising a set of twins on her own.

Widow shares heartbreaking personal story

Speaking passionately at the demonstration, she said, “As you are seeing me, I’m a young widow. I am a lady whose husband was kidnapped and killed after paying ransom just one year after my wedding, and I gave birth to a set of twins. I have a lifetime experience that is heartbreaking all through my life.”

Her emotional testimony highlighted the intersection of insecurity and governance issues in Nigeria.

Calls for free and fair elections

She urged the Senate to implement reforms that would ensure transparency and accountability in elections.

“We want electronic transmission of our election results, real-time electronic transmission, one man, one vote. Our votes must count. That’s all why we are here, and that’s why I’m here,” she added.

The protest, which drew civil society members and activists, focused on the demand for free and fair elections, including the adoption of electronic vote transmission to curb manipulation and improve public confidence in the electoral process.

Social media users responded to her story with a mix of empathy and debate. Some highlighted the need for broader security reforms alongside electoral changes, while others praised her courage in speaking out despite personal tragedy.
