Brentford 1 Arsenal 1: Gunners throw away lead as Bees sting them at set-piece

SET PIECES were meant to be the weapon that fired Arsenal to the title.

So there was more than a hint of irony that Mikel Arteta’s side stumbled at Brentford because of a long throw.

Bees right-back Michael Kayode launched one of his monster throws into the Arsenal box and it was eventually fired home by Keane Lewis-Potter.

It was a dagger for the Gunners in this game, cancelling out Noni Madueke’s opener ten minutes earlier just after the hour mark.

How much of a dagger it is in the title race, only time will tell.

It has certainly made things interesting. Only last Saturday, those in Islington were in the pubs toasting going nine points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Prem.

Now that gap is down to just four points after the Gunners drew here.

Arsenal are still in the driving seat of this title race and can stretch their lead to seven when they travel to Wolves on Wednesday.

But they must play far better than this.

The Gunners were off the pace, shaky at the back and, at the end, the side that was holding on for a point.

Injuries – yes, them again – did not help Arteta. William Saliba fell ill on the morning of this game, while Kai Havertz was out with a hamstring injury.

Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard were only fit enough for the bench after just returning to full fitness.
