Lookmans Atletico progress as Barcelona fall short in Copa del Rey semi-final

Barcelona’s hopes of reaching the Copa del Rey final ended Tuesday as they fell 3-0 at home to Atletico Madrid, losing 4-3 on aggregate.

Despite an energetic attacking performance led by teenage stars Marc Bernal and Lamine Yamal, the Blaugrana could not complete the comeback.

Bernal shines but Barça falters

Teenage midfielder Marc Bernal scored twice, giving Barcelona brief moments of hope.

The first came after Lamine Yamal’s clever run left two Atletico defenders behind, allowing him to tee up Bernal for a simple finish into an empty net. Bernal added a second goal later, volleying in a searching cross from Joao Cancelo at the back post.

Ferran Torres, however, missed two early opportunities, failing to capitalise on good positions, while other attacking efforts repeatedly found Atletico goalkeeper Juan Musso.

Gerard Martin’s strike over the bar was the closest Barcelona came to completing the turnaround.

The visitors rarely threatened, with Ademola Lookman missing a headed chance late in the first half.

Moments later, a penalty awarded after Pedri was fouled allowed Raphinha to score the final goal before halftime, leaving Barcelona with a mountain to climb.

Atletico’s resilience holds

Atletico Madrid, while largely defensive, executed a disciplined game plan under pressure.

They absorbed wave after wave of Barcelona attacks, relying on smart positioning and Musso’s goalkeeping to protect their aggregate lead.

The victory ensures Atletico will face either Real Sociedad or Athletic Club in the final scheduled for April.
