Former England international Raheem Sterling has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving following a single-vehicle crash on the M3 motorway in Hampshire.

Police confirmed that the 31-year-old was detained after a Lamborghini reportedly collided with motorway barriers on Thursday morning.

Police launch investigation

According to Hampshire Police, officers were called shortly before 9am following reports of a crash on the southbound carriageway near the Minley Interchange.

Authorities said no other vehicles were involved in the incident and no injuries were reported.

According to report by BBC, the Hampshire Police said: “Just before 9am on Thursday, we received reports that a Lamborghini was in collision with barriers on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange.

“No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported.”

The force added that the driver, identified only as a 31-year-old man from Berkshire, was arrested on suspicion of multiple offences.

“The driver, a 31-year-old man, from Berkshire, has been arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs, driving dangerously, possession of a Class C drug and failing to provide a specimen. He has been bailed while our enquiries continue.”

Sterling released on bail

Sterling has since been released on bail pending further investigations.

A source close to the former Manchester City and Chelsea winger confirmed the arrest but disputed suggestions that drugs had been found in his system, stating there was “no proof” of drug use.

The source also said Sterling had endured “an extremely tough couple of years” and had been made to feel “worthless” and “forgotten about.”

Former England star seeking fresh start

Sterling spent the second half of last season with Dutch club Feyenoord after leaving Chelsea in January.

The winger joined the Eredivisie side on a short-term deal but made only eight appearances before the end of the campaign.

Before his move to the Netherlands, Sterling agreed a mutual termination of his Chelsea contract, bringing an end to a difficult spell at Stamford Bridge following his 2022 transfer from Manchester City.

The former Liverpool academy graduate won four Premier League titles during his time at City and earned 82 caps for England, with his most recent international appearance coming at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
