Posting about kidnapping on WhatsApp wont change anything — Man urges Nigerians to focus on voter registration

Nigerian man criticizes what he described as performative activism on social media, particularly the habit of sharing posts about insecurity and kidnappings on private WhatsApp statuses.

In a video circulating online, the man argued that many people express outrage online without taking practical steps that could influence governance and public policy.

He questioned the effectiveness of repeatedly reposting kidnapping-related content on WhatsApp, suggesting that such posts often reach only personal contacts rather than decision-makers or a wider audience.

Instead, he urged Nigerians to focus on obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and encouraging others to do the same.

According to him, active participation in the electoral process is a more meaningful way to drive change and hold leaders accountable than simply sharing posts about national issues.

The man said …

“Most of you all are so used to performance. Tell me why you are posting about kidnap on your WhatsApp status. Who is seeing that rubbish? Do you have any politician on your WhatsApp status? You left what you’re supposed to be doing and be posting rubbish.

My friend post about PVC. You sef go and get your PVC and sensitive others to go and get their PVC and keep resharing. It’s not posting about kidnapping and saying keep resharing. Who is seeing it?

Instead of you to post it on Instagram where people can actually see these kinds of thing but you’d be posting ny@sh and rubb!sh, then now come to WhatsApp that is private and be posting about k!dn@pping.

Don’t worry until it gets to you, you’ll see performance. People will pretend to care when they don’t actually care. Do what’s necessary, get your PVC and always tell people to get their PVC cause that’s what your contacts need.”
