They believed we would always earn the money back, no matter how much they took — Survivor of kidnapping narrates emotional story

A man has shared his experience of surviving kidnapping and banditry, recounting how his family faced escalating ransom demands during his captivity.

The incident occurred during a period of heightened insecurity in Nigeria, when armed groups increasingly targeted commuters and residents across affected regions.

According to the survivor, the ordeal began with an initial ransom demand of ₦15 million, which his family eventually paid alongside food items and personal belongings valued at over ₦600,000.

Despite compliance, the captors continued to increase their demands, insisting the family could still raise more money after his release.

He said the pressure intensified as the kidnappers made assumptions about his family’s financial status.

Endless demands under captivity

The man explained that his family’s decision to rent a vehicle to deliver the ransom worsened the situation, as the kidnappers concluded they owned the car and had significant assets.

“They believed no matter what they collected, we would work and earn it back. They even told my mother to sell her house and car to raise ₦55 million.”

He described the emotional toll on his family as devastating, saying the constant threats and negotiations left lasting trauma.

A wider pattern of vulnerability

The survivor noted that ordinary Nigerians are often targeted because they lack the security enjoyed by wealthier individuals.

“Watching my family struggle under that pressure broke me. The fear and emotional torture were overwhelming.”

Similar concerns were widely debated in 2021, when public outcry followed reports of mass kidnappings and soaring ransom payments across the country, prompting calls for stronger security responses.

His account has since drawn public attention, with many Nigerians echoing demands for urgent action against kidnapping and banditry.

As conversations continue, the story highlights the growing consensus that insecurity remains a national crisis affecting families, livelihoods, and the country’s social fabric.
