Egypt made history by winning their first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout match after defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in Dallas.

The Pharaohs held their nerve in the shootout, with defender Hossam Abdelmaguid converting the decisive penalty after Australia’s Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington both failed from the spot.

The victory sends Egypt into the last 16, where they will face either Argentina or Cape Verde.

Egypt strike first before Australia respond

Egypt took the lead in the 13th minute despite Australia making the brighter start to the contest.

Karim Hafez delivered an inviting cross from the right, and Emam Ashour found space inside the penalty area to power his header beyond goalkeeper Patrick Beach for his second goal of the tournament.

The goal also highlighted Egypt’s improved attacking record, with the team scoring six goals during this World Cup, more than they managed across their previous tournament appearances combined.

Australia nearly made the perfect start when Cristian Volpato’s long-range effort clipped the crossbar in the opening minutes.

The Socceroos continued to press for an equaliser, but Aziz Behich failed to convert a clear opportunity before halftime.

Egypt missed the chance to double their advantage early in the second half when Omar Marmoush shot wide after breaking through on goal.

Australia eventually found a way back into the match in the 55th minute when Mohamed Hany accidentally turned Aiden O’Neill’s free-kick into his own net.

Pharaohs keep composure from the spot

Both sides pushed for a winner in the closing stages, with Australia surviving a late scare when goalkeeper Beach produced an excellent save to deny Ramy Rabia’s powerful header in stoppage time.

Mohamed Salah also created another chance in extra time, but Haissem Hassan’s effort was blocked by Souttar as the match headed to penalties.

Egypt remained composed during the shootout, with Salah among those who converted successfully.

Australia’s hopes faded after Souttar and Herrington missed their penalties, leaving Abdelmaguid to score the winning kick and spark celebrations among the Egyptian players and supporters.

Egypt will now continue their World Cup campaign with a last-16 meeting against either Argentina or Cape Verde, while Australia’s tournament comes to an end after a hard-fought contest.
