Yusuf brace powers Nigeria to consecutive Unity Cup title

AdminBy AdminMay 31, 2026Updated:May 31, 2026No Comments2 Mins Read

Alhassan Yusuf scored twice as Nigeria defeated Jamaica 3-0 in London on Saturday to retain the Unity Cup and continue their perfect record in the competition.

The Super Eagles produced a commanding display at The Valley to secure their fourth Unity Cup title, having previously lifted the trophy in 2002, 2004 and 2025.

Yusuf netted in each half, while Terem Moffi also found the target as Eric Chelle’s side outclassed the Reggae Boyz in a repeat of last year’s final.

Fast start sets tone for Super Eagles

Nigeria took control of the contest almost immediately, opening the scoring after just three minutes.

A long throw into the penalty area created confusion in the Jamaican defence, and although goalkeeper Coniah Boyce-Clarke managed to keep out the initial effort, Yusuf reacted quickest to convert the rebound.

The early breakthrough allowed the Super Eagles to dictate possession and control the tempo of the match, limiting Jamaica’s attacking opportunities.

Chelle made only one change from the side that defeated Zimbabwe in the semi-finals, with Rafiu Durosinmi joining Moffi and Femi Azeez in attack.

Despite creating few clear chances before the interval, Nigeria remained firmly on top and carried their one-goal advantage into halftime.

Moffi and Yusuf complete dominant win

Jamaica briefly threatened after the restart when Kaheim Dixon went down inside the penalty area following a challenge from Arthur Okonkwo, but appeals for a spot-kick were dismissed.

Nigeria responded positively and doubled their lead in the 59th minute through Moffi.

Azeez beat his marker on the flank before delivering an accurate cross that the striker headed past Boyce-Clarke.

The winger remained influential throughout the second half and later tested the Jamaican goalkeeper with a free-kick from the edge of the area.

Super Eagles look ahead

The result was sealed in stoppage time when substitute Philip Otele launched a swift counterattack and found Yusuf with a precise pass.

The midfielder kept his composure before slotting home his second goal of the evening to complete a convincing 3-0 victory.
