Sancho exits Man United as failed Old Trafford spell ends

Manchester United have confirmed that winger Jadon Sancho will leave the club as a free agent following the expiration of his contract, bringing an end to a difficult five-year spell at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old departs after struggling to meet expectations following his £73 million move from Borussia Dortmund in 2021, with the club officially releasing its retained list to the Premier League confirming his exit.

Sancho featured 83 times for United across all competitions but failed to establish himself as a consistent starter, recording just 12 goals and six assists during his time in England.

His spell was also disrupted by a high-profile fallout with management, followed by multiple loan moves away from the club.

Early promise fails to translate in England

Sancho arrived at United as one of Europe’s most highly rated young wingers after a standout period in the Bundesliga, where his creativity and output at Borussia Dortmund made him one of the most sought-after attackers in world football.

However, the transition to the Premier League proved challenging. Despite flashes of technical quality, he was unable to sustain form or secure a long-term role in the squad, eventually spending time on loan at Dortmund and later at clubs in England.

United’s statement confirmed his departure alongside Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia, as the club continues its squad restructuring process ahead of the new season.

The club said: “Jadon Sancho arrived at Old Trafford in 2021 and was also part of the 2023 Carabao Cup-winning side.

“The winger played 83 times for the club before he returned to Borussia Dortmund on loan and also made temporary moves to Chelsea and Aston Villa. Everyone at the club would like to thank Casemiro, Tyrell, and Jadon for their contributions and wish them the very best of luck for the future.”

Return to Germany remains likely option

Despite his struggles in England, Sancho still retains strong interest in Germany, where he previously produced the most productive spell of his career. Reports suggest Borussia Dortmund remain open to a third stint for the winger as he looks to rebuild momentum.

Sancho previously registered 114 goal contributions in 137 appearances during his first spell at Dortmund, a level of output he has not replicated since leaving the Bundesliga.

His departure marks another high-profile reset at Manchester United, who are now focused on trimming their wage structure heading into the transfer window.
